The Dingos were honoured to have Tom Baulch or as he is more commonly known across social media platforms , Prime Train, don the red and black this past weekend in the top of the table match up where the Dingos ran away with a 90 point victory.
For those who don't know, Tom is a fitness coach and influencer who offers personalized training and nutrition programs that are designed to help individuals unlock their athletic potential and achieve their fitness goals through his personal training platform. Alongside his passion for fitness, Tom has been an avid promoter of Aussie Rules football, spreading his love for the game throughout Australia & internationally, playing for clubs.
We caught up with Tom after his Dingos debut to talk about the game and what it was like playing footy in Canada.
Derek Bressette (DB): All right Prime, first question, I haven't actually seen you play in person before. Do you normally score goals 10 seconds into the game?
Prime Train (PT): Not always. That was a good little confidence boost for me. It was good. I think Roo got it out of the midfield and just got me one out the back, so I got a nice little cheap one to start off the day, which was very, very good. Good for the confidence.
DB: You've played footy all over the world, and obviously all over Australia. How does playing footy in Canada compare to some of the other places you've had the privilege of playing the sport in?
PT: Very hot! It was about 32 degrees Celsius out here today. But, I'm really fortunate to have played all around Australia. I've played as high as like VFL and WAFL, country and state leagues as well, and internationally. I've played for AFL London, and in New York as well, and Canada stacks up very, very highly against them. The facilities here are incredible, the ground is amazing, the grass is well cut, which I'm very happy with as well.
It was a lot of fun. I think that the standard of AFL Canada or AFL Ontario is very, very high.
DB: You got to play in the forward line for us today, and you were right beside Zachy, who is an 18-year-old Canadian that's just kind of started playing footy. His dad is a longtime member of our club as well, and a club legend. From the point of view of 18-year-olds playing in Canada, what was like playing next to some of those local guys in the lineup today?
PT: It's incredible. I think that those kind of stories are the reason that I do it and that I love being able to come out to clubs like this and maybe give them a little bit of ups and give them a little bit of media exposure as well because he's a superstar. He's only 18 years old, and I think he kicked three or four today and just putting his head over the footy, which was great. There was a couple of French lads in the middle as well as some guys from Great Britain, there's people from everywhere and it's so good. I think that seeing such a multicultural game here in Canada, when in Australia it's such an Australian game and you just see Aussies playing it. It's great to see that the game is expanding overseas, and we're getting so many people to play it and play it at a really high level.
DB: So on the idea of playing the game overseas, do you have any, any other destinations on a footy bucket list that you would like to come maybe knock out before it's all said and done?
PT: Yeah, absolutely. I think that there's a couple to hit through. I fly out to Dubai tonight and I might be playing some footy there and then I'm actually off to play the AFL Asian Championships in the next couple of weeks, so that should be a little bit of fun as well. But I think that for me, just continuing to give the game a little bit of a foundation overseas, and give it a little bit of media exposure, post up videos, stories, and kind of get it out. I think that as well, there's so many Aussies that live here in Canada or live in the US or wherever and they don't even know that footy exists over here and they can play it. So, being able to use my platform for that is is really, really good and I'm really grateful that I can use it in a positive way.
DB: Perfect, man. Thanks for coming out and playing for us today.
PT: Thank you so much for having me.
